This has been a hard year for me. I had to get used to a new school and there is a lot of work. Throughout this first half-year at DSA, the most important and useful thing I have learned is copyright law. The main reason is because it is real world knowlegdge that I will have to understand and use constantly as a game designer and artist. I will most likely use it to check my own work to see if anything could get me sued under copyright law. I also need to be able to protect my own creative designs and products. I am super exited to do consept art for video games. That is the project I am most looking forward to because that is what I want to do after I graduate from DSA.
I want you to reflect upon this year so far. What do you consider to be the most interesting or useful information you have gained this year? Why do you think this information in interesting or important? How do you think you will use this information between now and graduating from DSA, regardless of being a GAD concentrator or not? What are you most looking forward to doing in this class in the coming months?

There are many ways to solve problems with data. One major problem around the world is a lack of access to clean water. According to the United Nations,
http://epi.yale.edu/our-methods/water-and-sanitation
A lot of the world, including much of Africa still has limited access to clean drinking water. To solve this problem, you would need a lot of knowledge of the area and the infrastructure. You would need to be a scientist who studies ecology, water systems, and public health. You would also need to know about water filtration, sanitation, and the ecosystems of rivers. To acquire this knowledge, you would need training and a lot of education, maybe a PhD. You would need to be able to read maps, and have connections to the local population. You would need to have access to villages and people that live along a river without sewer systems. My research on this problem would be to identify illnesses that come from contaminated water and how to reduce the amount people getting sick. I would set up an experiment between two water sources, one being upstream and one being downstream. For six weeks, I would meausure the number of people who got sick or died because of contanimated water and compare the two sites. My hypothesis is that the people drinking water from upstream will have a lower rate of illness and death. The independent variables in this experiment are the river and time. The dependent variables are the illness and death that occur at each test site. If my theory is correct, I would plan to remake the infrastructure of the area downstream so water from the river is filtered to remove the pollution. After that, I would measure the rates of illnesses and deaths for another six weeks again. Right now, to me success means getting passing grades this year and learning the most in the classes that interest me (world history, art, and scientific visualization). I feel successful right now because I am passing my classes. I'm working hard in school, especially in art. Over the past four years, I've worked hard to teach myself how to draw. I took a risk and applied to this school which has given me a chance to take the classes that really interest me. There is a lot of work to do this year and I have started using a planner to remind me of the work that needs to be done (I didn't used to do this). I've talked to my teachers to help keep track of assignments. Sometimes I come in before school or stay after.
When I started drawing when I was younger, I had people tell me that I couldn't draw at all. In my mind, that was a challenge to show them they were wrong. I kept experiementing with the things I was doing until I learned how to improve my drawing. Failure has motivated me in a lot of ways. Now I'm pretty confident in my ability to draw and I really enjoy art in general. I even draw for other people. In ten years, I want to have a job that involves art and video games. I would love to work as a concept artist for a video game company. I would define success at that point by having a job that I liked, with people that I enjoy working with, and having enough cash to keep me stable. Here are the steps for my ten year plan:
